US President Donald Trump has signed an order for making a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and US Digital Asset Stockpile. This makes the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve the largest in the world.
What is the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve?
The White House Fact Sheet explains: “With a fixed supply of 21 million coins, there is a strategic advantage to being among the first nations to create a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The United States currently holds a significant amount of bitcoin but has not maximized its strategic position as a unique store of value in the global financial system.”
The reserve will use Bitcoin seized from criminal and civil cases—no extra costs to taxpayers. The US plans to hold onto this Bitcoin, not sell it, and might even acquire more. The Secretaries of Treasury and Commerce will figure out how to buy more without piling costs for taxpayers.
There’s also a Digital Asset Stockpile for other non-BTC assets that the Department of Treasury has from seizures. The government plans to stick with this existing pile, without acquiring more.
Crypto Community Rejoices
The crypto community has received the news enthusiastically. David Sacks, the White House AI & Crypto Czar, said: “Promises made, promises kept.”
